About Akihabara

About Akihabara

Akihabara was developed as a home appliance town, but with the changes of the times, it has transformed into a town for personal computers and IT equipment, and eventually a sacred place for subcultures. The state-of-the-art devices and information are always gathered here, and even now it is still a source of unique culture.

Akihabara at Night

Akihabara at Night

The number of crimes in Akihabara is decreasing every year. However, occasional crimes occur mostly between 18:00 - 20:00. Therefore, it’s best to be careful during the evening hours. In contrast, after those hours, the crime rate is greatly reduced, so you could say that nighttime safety is not so bad.

Akihabara Electric Town

Akihabara is the best electric town in Japan. Akihabara's current appearance can be traced back to the reconstruction period after World War II. At that time, lots of students bought products from stalls selling radio parts. Following this, with the prosperity of radio parts shops, electronics wholesalers and junk shops began to open shop, setting the foundation for an electric town.

Nowadays, you can find anything related to electricity. Not only complete products such as personal computers and large home appliances, but PC parts and small electronic parts are also on sale. There are also junk shops which specialize in used goods.

Akihabara is Famous as a Sacred Place for Anime

Akihabara is also famous as a sacred place for anime. Until the 1900s it flourished as an electric town. However, demand for games and anime software increased due to the economic slump of consumer electronics and the PCs becoming popular, so the number of shops stocking anime gradually increased.

Nowadays, there are shops that specialize in anime goods, collector's items like figures, and shops that stock used anime goods. There are also cafes with anime motifs.
