Tired of U.S coffee chains? Try the Japanese retro coffee shop chain Komeda Coffee!

Komeda Coffee is a coffee shop chain from Nagoya.


Many years ago, Tokyo started to have Starbucks everywhere and was making fun of people in other Japanese regions which didn’t have any trendy U.S coffee shop.

But since few years ago, some regional chains are progressively opening in Tokyo for the people who are not interested in Starbucks sweet drinks like elderly.

Komeda Coffee which is opening more and more shop every year in Tokyo try to keep it’s retro atmosphere (a little bit cheesy) which give people a nostalgic and soothing filling.

You can find many drink but also some cheap specialities like sandwiches, cakes, toast or some food.

There most famous foods are Ogura Toast, a thick toast served with margarine and red bean paste (ogura) to spread as you want on the bread. Perfect for a rich breakfast or break with a unique Japanese taste.

The other speciality is Chinowaru, a hot danish pastry topped with soft ice-cream and syrup.
The contrast between the hot pastry and the milky ice cream is absolutely delicious!

There’s two sizes available, but even the mini size is quite big (on the picture) so you can share it with a friend.

For the drinks, there’s plenty of standard coffee drinks but also drinks topped with whipped cream or ice-cream.

You can also find some unique drinks from Komeda, like this melon soda topped with ice-cream served into a glass shaped like a boot (!?), or fruit flavored cold milk and juices served into some glass barrels…

Those strange containers are very popular with children.

Every drink comes with a small bag of roasted soybeans as a snack.
