3 Non-Smoking Izakaya in Shibuya

Japan’s smoking culture is huge, as it has one of world’s highest smoking population. Even though the government has imposed a couple laws on smoking in public areas, smoking inside restaurants are still very common. Knowing that Olympics is coming in 4 years and a lot of foreign tourists are not pleasure with the smell of cigarettes during their meal, Japanese government has recently passed a bill for restaurants to built a separate smoking area for smokers. However, the bill is yet to be executed.

But don’t worry! We have you back. For a lot of you, traveling to Japan involves eating and izakaya is one place a lot of tourist are eager to get in but are afraid to go inside because of the strong odor of cigarette. It sticks to your clothes, makes your hair smells and ultimately changes the taste of your food. In order to attract more non-smokers and female customers, more and more izakaya are turning their restaurant fully smoking prohibited. Meaning customers can enjoy their food without the worry of walking out smelling like smoke and can have a better taste for food.

Here are a list of Japanese Izakaya/ Restaurants that provides non-smoking dining experience!

1.Torikizoku/ Shibuya Nishi-guchi

Torikizuku is a well-known izakaya chain for yakitori and most importantly for its price. Everything thing here are 280 Yen. Yes you heard me, 280 YEN!!!! That means every single order of drinks, food, desserts are 280 Yen! This place is a very popular among college students because of its low-price. There are around 5 Torikizoku here near Shibuya station but only 1 of them provide completely non-smoking environment.

2. Gokutan-Gyumasamune/ Shibuya

Gokutan-Gyumasamune is specialized in beef tongue, a delicacy originated from Sendai, Miyagi. The area is also famous for a samurai called Date-Masamune during the Sengoku- period. By combining the two most famous things in Sendai, this izakaya was born. Shibuya’s Gokutan-Gyumasamune is located near Center Street and is very easy to access.

3. Nihonshu-Genka- Shuzou/ Shibuya

If you are a sake lover, you are meant to visit this izakaya. This izakaya is specialized in Japanese sake and they have more than 40 different kinds of sake waiting for you. Their food are also specially made for pairing with sake so I am pretty sure you will have a good time. If you REALLY like to drink sake, they also offer nomihodai (all you can drink) for 40 kinds of sake starting from 2000 yen and above.
