After a long wait, Domonique Ansel Bakery is finally on Asian shores! Famous for his cronuts- a cross between a croissant and doughnut- the baker that boasts impeccable French techniques paired with a New York attitude recently opened a branch in Omotesando.

Eager to try out the cronut, which is notorious for selling out very quickly due to high demand, I went at 10am on a weekday. Unfortunately, even that was not early enough! As I approached being the 12th person in line, one of the waiters notified us that the cronut was sold out.

I ended up getting the other highly reviewed item, the DKA (Dominique's Kouign Amann), a croissant like pastry with a caramelized exterior, and a Paris-Tokyo, a pastry that beautifully combines the taste of matcha and passionfruit that is sold only in Japan.

Service is fairly straightforward, you line up to get your pastry and can either choose to take away or eat in the futuristic premise. The walls opposite of the bakery case feature a mashup of the NYC and Paris subway map, but in place of real station names, the names of chefs that have inspired Dominique and names of past cronut flavors. There is also a window where you can observe the baking taking place.

I If you order a Frozen S’more, another best-selling item, you can even watch it made right in front of you. Go early though, the lines tend to be long!
