Akasaka Palace

Akasaka Palace, also known as the State Guest House, is one of the two State guesthouses of Japan and is a popular tourist sightseeing spot. It was originally built to become the Crown Prince’s Palace in 1909, it was remodeled from 1968 to 1974 and became the official accommodation for foreign dignitaries from all around the world.

In 2009, the Akasaka Palace was designated as a National Treasure of Japan and is now open to the general public. Advanced reservations are recommended as it can get crowded depending on the time of year. Those that make advanced reservations are given preferential admission to Akasaka Palace.

The main building and main garden of Akasaka Palace is open from 10 am to 5 pm with final admission at 4 pm. The tour takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes.

One important thing to remember though, is that due to Akasaka Palace being the official accommodation for foreign dignitaries, public admission to the grounds can be cancelled with very short notice.
