“Ekiben” are special lunch boxes only sold in Japanese stations and trains.
It’s so popular that you can find hundreds of different “ekiben” all over Japan.
Since Japanese people travelling by train, they also like to enjoy special food for this special occasion, like regional food.
Last time I was travelling in Shinkansen back from Osaka to Tokyo for work, i chose an ekiben with “kuri okowa for dinner.

Look how delicious and cute it is!

There’s many things to enjoy!
Fish, tofu, carrots, mushroom and other vegetables.
“Okowa” is an appellation for sticky rice steamed with other ingredients.
This time it was with small red azuki beans and chestnuts.
The chestnuts and red beans steamed rice, okowa in Japanese was also very good.

There’s a small bag of salt and black sesame to sprinkle on the rice.

After a hard day of work it’s really a pleasure to enjoy some delicious food in the train back home.
When travelling by Shinkansen or train through Japan, be sure to try “ekiben” from many regions !
