To protect Kamikochi’s rich natural environment, visitors are encouraged to use trains and buses when traveling to the area. Even if you use a rental car, you cannot drive into Kamikochi itself. Please park your car at the paid Sawando Parking Lot or Hirayu Akandana Parking Lot, and transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi from there.

Access to Kamikochi from Tokyo
You can reach Kamikochi from Tokyo Station by taking the Hokuriku Shinkansen or the Limited Express "Azusa" to Matsumoto Station, then transferring to the Alpico Highway Bus to Kamikochi. The total travel time is about 4 to 5 hours. There is also the option of taking the Limited Express "Azusa" from Shinjuku Station or a highway bus from the Shinjuku Bus Terminal to Matsumoto Station.
There are also direct buses to Kamikochi with no transfers required. By taking the Alpico Kotsu highway bus "Sawayaka Shinshu-go" (reservation required) from Tokyo Station Yaesu South Exit or Shinjuku Bus Terminal, you can travel directly to Kamikochi Bus Terminal without passing through Matsumoto Station. In addition, the "Mainichi Alpen-go" (one round trip per day, reservation required) departing from Takebashi and Shinjuku is also available.
Access to Kamikochi from Nagoya
From Nagoya Station, take the JR Limited Express "Shinano" to Matsumoto Station, then transfer to a local bus. The total travel time is about 3.5 to 4 hours. You can also take a highway bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center to Matsumoto.
In addition, there is a direct bus to Kamikochi from the Meitetsu Bus Center (Meitetsu Highway Bus, one round trip per day, reservation required), allowing you to travel directly to Kamikochi Bus Terminal without any transfers.
Access to Kamikochi from Osaka
The most common route is to take the Shinkansen from Osaka Station to Nagoya, then transfer to the Limited Express "Shinano" to Matsumoto Station, and from there take a bus to Kamikochi. The total travel time is about 5 hours.
You can also take the Limited Express "Hida" or a highway bus from Osaka Station to Takayama Station or Takayama Nohi Bus Center, then transfer to a shuttle bus from Hirayu Bus Terminal to Kamikochi.
Additionally, direct buses operated by Alpico Kotsu "Sawayaka Shinshu-go" (1–2 round trips per day, reservation required) are available from Osaka (Hankyu Sanbangai) and Kyoto, allowing you to travel directly to Kamikochi Bus Terminal without any transfers.
What Is the Weather and Temperature Like in Kamikochi? What Should You Wear?
Kamikochi is located at a high elevation, so the temperature is about 5 to 10°C lower than in the city. Even in summer, the daytime high rarely exceeds the low 20s°C, making it comfortable, and it is not uncommon for temperatures to drop below 15°C in the mornings and evenings.
In spring and autumn, mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, so it is recommended to bring a fleece or a light down jacket to wear over your clothes. In summer, you may sweat while walking during the day, but since the temperature can change quickly depending on the weather and time of day, bringing a long-sleeved cardigan or windbreaker will help you adjust and stay comfortable.
