What is a Fruit Parlor?

A fruit parlor is a type of café that serves parfaits, cakes, drinks, and other sweets made with seasonal fruits. It is said that fruit parlors in Japan began when Ginza Sembikiya opened in 1913 (Taisho 2).

In Tokyo, there are several famous fruit parlors—some focus mainly on parfaits, while others also offer a wide variety of sweets such as sliced cakes and waffles. Most fruit parlors serve seasonal menus featuring fruits at their peak. When visiting a fruit parlor, it’s a good idea to check if they have menu items that feature your favorite fruits.

Ginza Parfait

Operated by Ginza Sembikiya, which was founded in 1894 after branching off from “Sembikiya Sohonten” (known at the time as Shinbashi Sembikiya). In 1913, it opened Japan’s first fruit parlor, continually exploring new ways to enjoy fruits, including inventing the “Fruit Punch.”

In addition to offering seasonal fruits like melons and peaches, as well as parfaits made with them, the company also operates the “Ginza Main Store Fruit Shop” and the “Shinjuku Store Fruit Shop.”

Seasonal limited menus using domestic strawberries, mangoes, peaches, and Japanese chestnuts are so popular that customers often inquire about their sales periods. Other popular items include “Seasonal Fruit Assortment” (¥1,540 and up), “Fruit Punch” (¥1,320) with syrup containing red wine, and “Fruit Sandwich” (¥1,540) made with whipped cream, apple, yellow peach, melon, strawberry, and chestnut between slices of bread.
