Narukawa Art Museum is located on a hill overlooking Lake Ashinoko in Kanagawa Prefecture. It possesses a large selection of modern nihonga. Appreciate modern nihonga at Narukawa Art Museum

Narukawa Art Museum was opened in 1988 on the shore of Lake Ashinoko in Hakone. It is built on top of a lush hill with a location overlooking Lake Ashinoko. You can also see Mt. Fuji from there which is fantastic. The museum has a collection of 4000 modern nihonga which are masterpieces representing an overview of modern nihonga. It displays about 150 pieces by Yamamoto Kyujin and 40 pieces by Hirayama Ikuo. In addition, the museum also introduces works of promising painters in the future. It has exhibits related to the future of modern nihonga. You can enjoy the beautiful view of Lake Ashinoko with artworks in the museum. The opening hours of Narukawa Art Museum are 9:00~19:00(open all year round). Admission fee is 1300 yen for adults, 900 yen for university/high school students and 600 yen for middle/elementary school students.

Highlights of Narukawa Art Museum

The museum focuses on collecting masterpieces in an attempt to convey to the wider public the splendor of post-Second World War nihonga. At the forefront of modern nihonga is artist Kyujin Yamamoto, with his works constituting the museum’s core collection. Not only pieces from famous painters but those from promising painters are also collected and exhibited, which is one of the museum's features. Also, you can have a panoramic view of Lake Ashinoko and be able to look at Mt. Fuji and Mount Hakone from the inside of the large glass-clad museum. Snacks and cake sets are offered at the museum's cafes. You can look at the beautiful view of Lake Ashinoko while enjoying tea time. At the museum shop, you can buy products such as framed art prints and original goods which are perfect souvenirs.

Access to Narukawa Art Museum

If you go from Tokyo Haneda Airport, take the Keikyu Line to arrive at Shinagawa Station. Then, take Shinkansen or JR Line to reach Odawara Station. Take the Hakone Tozan Train at Odawara Station and get off at "Hakone-Yumoto Station". After that, take the Hakone Tozan Bus and get off at "Motohakone-ko", followed by a 3-mintue walk.
