Osaka’s Art Museums of Various Artistic and Cultural Values

Osaka has a number of great art museums. Ranging from art of traditional handicrafts, a more modern and contemporary ones, Osaka has them all. Visiting these facilities is definitely a great experience. While some of the facility preserves the traditional values of their handicrafts and promotes to educate people about it, they also aims to advance with a more contemporary concept while exhibits their collection of national treasure grade.

National Museum of Art, Osaka

The National Museum of Art, Osaka is Japan’s fourth national museum, and it that resides underneath the ground of Nakanoshima, Osaka. Focuses on contemporary art, and design by the famous Argentinian architect named Cesar Pelli, this facility creates a contrast within the surrounding city landscape, definitely catches the attention of many that crosses the area.

The entrance fee is 430 yen and free-of-charge for visitors under the age of 18, and also age of 65 and above. If you are a university student, you are entitled an entrance fee of 130 yen. Alternatively come in the evening (5 PM to 8PM) on Friday and Saturday and get almost half the price of the admission fee.

Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Arts

Located in Tennouji Park lies the Osaka Municipal Museum of Fine Art, it has been established for more than 70 years, opened in May 1939, and the museum has collected more than 8000 of artworks of Japanese and Chinese Art. Its collections include painting, sculpture, craftworks, and many others. Many of these works are considered national treasures and important cultural properties.

The general admission is 300 yen for adult and 200 yen for high schoolers. Junior high and below, as well of people of age 65 and above may enter without any fees.

Japan Folk Art Museum, Osaka

For centuries, Japanese folks have been using traditional handicrafts in their daily lives for a long time. It had become common tools for them to use such handicrafts in daily chores, which includes glassware, pottery, utensils and many more.. Regardless of it being crafted by a no-named artist, far from being a famous one, but the artistic quality of the crafts is fairly high.

Japan Folk Art Museum was established with the aim of preserving and promoting the handicrafts and the technique in making them that had been developed over centuries ago, at the same time promoting the usage of these handicrafts into modern daily life.

Admission fee is 500 yen for adults, 300 yen for university and high school students, and 150 yen for children.

Osaka City Museum of Modern Art

This is a museum that is still under development, and is about to entering its contruction phase. Targeted to be done by 2021, with the phrase “A Community Alive with Art”, this museum is aiming to serve as the landmark and symbol of the Aqua Metropolis of Osaka, and will specialized in modern and contemporary art of Japan and also the world.

With the idea of “passage going through the building”, this future museum is designed with easy accessibility by anyone, both by people of interest in art museum or not. It also aims to serves as a hub for art based activities. Furthermore it will be located in the district of Nakanoshima, just slightly north of the iconic National Museum of Art, Osaka.
