The symbol of Shinsekai, Tsutenkaku Tower, stands out as a landmark that becomes even more prominent at night. The tower is illuminated daily from sunset until 11:00 p.m., with approximately 400,000 LEDs creating a vibrant display. [Osaka] Tenjin Matsuri
One of Japan’s three major festivals and one of Osaka’s three major summer festivals. The festival runs for about a month from an auspicious day in late June to around July 25, but the highlight is the main festival on July 25. At night, the Funatogyo boat procession takes place on the Okawa River (formerly Yodo River), with many boats parading and fireworks lighting up the sky. The sight of bonfires, lanterns, and fireworks reflected on the river is truly breathtaking, letting you experience the splendor of this “festival of fire and water.”

A light-up attraction inside Kyoto Station Building, featuring the Grand Staircase that spans from the 4th to the 11th floors. Around 15,000 LEDs installed across 125 of the staircase’s 171 steps light up Kyoto Station in vibrant colors at night. In addition to the year-round designs, there are also special displays for Kyoto’s unique events such as the “Gion Matsuri” and “Gozan no Okuribi.” During the summer, the lights are on from 17:00 to 22:00.

[Kyoto] Tanabata Bamboo Decoration Light-up (Kifune Shrine)
This is a popular Tanabata event held at Kifune Shrine. During the event, you can hang tanzaku (wish strips) with your wishes on bamboo branches, and from sunset until around 20:00, the area is beautifully illuminated. The famous “Mizuura Mikuji,” a fortune slip that reveals your fortune when placed on water, is also a highlight. Experiencing it in the quiet nighttime shrine grounds creates an even more mystical atmosphere.

[Kyoto] Special Summer Night Viewing (Kodaiji Temple)
Kodaiji Temple is known as the temple founded by Nene, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, in memory of her late husband. During the night viewing, the temple grounds are enveloped in a magical atmosphere. In addition to a special exhibition, “Hyakki Yagyo Exhibition,” you can also participate in “Tomoshibi,” where you write messages to your ancestors or departed loved ones on wooden prayer sticks (gomagi) and dedicate them with candlelight at Ungian, in conjunction with the night viewing.

Starting in 2025, the “Former Foreign Settlement Summer Illumination” bathes Akashicho-suji, on the east side of Daimaru Kobe, in gentle light, making a stroll through the city instantly romantic. The lights are on from 18:00 to around 22:00, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful illuminated cityscape.
