The blooming season for cherry blossoms in Japan is usually from late March to early April. When the season arrives, famous cherry blossom spots such as Tokyo and Kyoto become extremely crowded. While these classic spots are wonderful, if you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed hanami (cherry blossom viewing), we recommend visiting the Hokuriku region. In this article, a local writer from Toyama in Hokuriku introduces recommended cherry blossom spots in Toyama, focusing on places they have actually visited. The collaboration of the Tateyama Mountain Range, tulips, and cherry blossoms unique to Toyama is truly a breathtaking sight. By experiencing these local spring landscapes, you’ll discover a new side of Japan that’s different from the big cities.

Toyama Prefecture is broadly divided into four areas: the central to southeastern area including Toyama City, the northwestern area where Takaoka City is located, the southwestern area including Tonami City and Gokayama, and the eastern area where Uozu City is found. Each area has its own representative cherry blossom spots that you should definitely visit when in Toyama. Here, we’ve summarized the features, best viewing times, and tips for experiencing these stunning spring landscapes.
1. Matsukawa Riverside (Toyama City)
This is the cherry blossom spot closest to Toyama Station. Along the Matsukawa River, which flows beside Toyama Castle Park, about 500 Somei Yoshino cherry trees are planted over a stretch of approximately 2.5 km, forming a tunnel of blossoms. The contrast between the red Matsukawa sightseeing boats and the pink cherry blossoms is stunning and impressive.

Also, because the walkway isn’t too wide, it’s a great place for taking photos of children running freely within the frame.

2026 Cherry Blossom Forecast and Travel Tips
To make sure you don’t miss Toyama’s cherry blossoms in 2026, be sure to check the blooming forecast in advance. Also, since Toyama is located in the Hokuriku region, compared to Tokyo or Kyoto, the climate tends to be rainier and temperatures are often lower. Finally, here are some tips on clothing and what to bring to make the most of your trip to Toyama.
2026 Cherry Blossom Forecast for Toyama
The cherry blossoms in Toyama usually start blooming in the last week of March and reach full bloom in the first week of April. A similar schedule is expected for 2026. If you’re planning a trip to Toyama, visiting during this period gives you a great chance to see the unique spring scenery of Toyama, where the Tateyama mountains, tulips, and cherry blossoms all come together.
However, in colder areas of Toyama such as Gokayama and Asahi-machi, the cherry blossoms tend to bloom about a week later than in the city center. If you’re staying for several days, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms in Toyama City or Takaoka City in the first half of your trip, and then visit Gokayama or Asahi-machi in the latter half for a different hanami experience.
What to Wear for Hanami in Toyama
Because of the proximity to snowy mountains, even in central Toyama City, the cold wind can make it feel much colder than the actual temperature. While you won’t need a heavy winter down jacket, it’s a good idea to bring a windproof jacket. If you opt for a lighter jacket, pack a sweatshirt or cardigan in your bag so you can adjust your layers as needed.
Toyama gets about 180 to 190 days of rain per year. If your body or feet get wet from the rain, the cold wind will feel even harsher, so it’s best to bring rain gear just in case. Also, since many hanami spots are along rivers or in parks with dirt paths, wearing comfortable sneakers or walking shoes is essential to enjoying hanami safely.
Why not tour the famous cherry blossom spots in Toyama and discover the beauty of Japan?
Hanami in Toyama, with its unique climate and rich natural surroundings, offers a chance to discover a different side of Japan’s beauty. It’s about two hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen. Toyama Airport also has routes connecting to Taipei (Taiwan), Seoul (South Korea), Shanghai and Dalian (China), making it easily accessible both domestically and internationally. Avoid the crowds of Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, and enjoy a peaceful spring in Toyama—a new way to experience the season. Be sure to visit and see the scenery unique to this region for yourself.
