Lee’s Travelog – Hiking Mt. Inari

Did you know that Fushimi Inari is actually the gateway to a longer hike up to Mt. Inari? I didn’t either, until last week! While Fushimi Inari is a shrine, it is also one of the numerous pathways one can take to reach atop the picturesque Mt. Inari.

The hike begins at the main gates of the Torii. This stretch may be a little crowded but do not give up just yet. 20 minutes up you will find that the toriis diverge into two lines. Either will bring you to your destination on the top of the mountain. At this point, the crowd begins to thin out as most tourists head downwards. Take the left turning after the middle shrine and you will find yourself underneath larger torii gates.

A further 20 minute walk will lead you to a beautiful lake and rest area.

Feel free to take a breather and enjoy some sweets at the local tea house. You can also send a postcard here if you like!

Another 1 hour later, and you will reach the top of Mt. Inari! Pat yourself on the back as you take in the view in peace and quiet, as most people do not make it all the way up. Be sure to not spend too long up there though, as the surroundings get creepy as the sun goes down.

Before you leave, don’t forget to treat yourself to another snack and perhaps a souvenir from one of the shops at the bottom of Mt. Inari!
