About Kesennuma, Sanriku 

Kesennuma in Sanriku is situated in Miyagi Prefecture's northwestern portion. Oshima, the biggest island in the Tohoku region, is at the entrance of Kesennuma Bay. At Kesennuma fishing port, many marine products are supplied. This town also leads Japan in the quantity of seafood fish catches like bonitos, sharks and sauries. Tsunami in Kesennuma

Kesennuma suffered a major tsunami damage in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. An approximately 13-meter high tsunami hit a building at Kesennuma Koyo High School. The Memorial Museum was built on the site of that high school to retain the state of the damage at that time. Tourists can freely tour the school. The explanations for the exhibits are offered in foreign languages like English.

Kesennuma Fish Market

Every day a lot of seafood is transferred to the fish market. Fish auctions begin in the morning on display inside the house with rows of fish. There is a 354 m long trip deck on the building's second floor. From the deck you can watch the market.

Kesennuma Shark Museum

Kesennuma Shark Museum is the only shark museum in Japan. Shark specimens are on display. You can also learn about the sea of Kesennuma, which has been resurrected after the earthquake.

The museum is located on the second floor of a tourism product manufacturer named "Umi no Ichi". There are also restaurants and souvenir shops that provide the specialties of Kesennuma. Credit card payments are not accepted. There is free Wi-Fi.
