Hey, everyone! Some of the best things about traveling are visiting the sights and popular spots—and of course, trying out the local specialties everywhere you go! Today I’m going to be introducing Miyagawa Asaichi Market in Takayama, Gifu—one of Japan’s three great asaichi morning markets—which is packed with local delicacies! It’s open every day, so you don’t have to worry about whether it’s on or not! I’m also going to be introducing a restaurant right by the market where you can try out some special set meals that are unique to Hida-Takayama.

The market is located around 15 minutes’ walk from JR Takayama Station. Miyagawa Asaichi Market was first held around the middle of the Edo period, and today is packed with around 60 stalls—although this may vary depending on the season and weather. The stalls sell fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables harvested by farmers here in Hida-Takayama, processed goods such as miso and tsukemono (pickled vegetables,) folk craft dolls called saru-bobo, and more!

After taking a walk around, how about a little break? Let’s head to Kajibashi Shokudo, which is right by Kajibashi Bridge at the entrance to the market.

From 6:00 every morning you can pick up the Hoba Miso and Komo-Dofu set meals, both of which are regional cuisine from Hida-Takayama.
Today I decided to go for the Komo-Dofu set.

Komo-dofu is made by rolling tofu in a bamboo mat called Komo and boiling it, and then cooking with dashi stock. It has a delicious, springy texture, and the flavor of the dashi has permeated right to the center! The accompanying boiled vegetables and miso soup are also deliciously soothing!
Having recharged both my mental and physical energy, I head back to the morning market for some souvenir shopping.

I’m very satisfied, and feel I’ve really got a taste of Hida-Takayama! Migayawa Asaichi Market definitely comes highly recommended!

The morning market is held every day from 6:30 am to midday. (From 8:00 am to midday during the winter season.)
The line-up is different according to the season, so it’s a great place to visit multiple times! I’d recommend getting there quite early. There’s also another morning market nearby called Jinyamae Asaichi.
