[Special Issue: Mt.Fuji] Lee’s Travelog – Quaint Village at the Foot of Mt. Fuji

※This article was published in November 2015

The Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba, better known as Iyashi no Sato (いやしの里) is a quaint village that sits on the north side of Mt. Fuji in the Yamanashi Prefecture. A former farming site, it was a functioning village until a landslide destroyed it in 1966. However, it was decided that it would be a shame to have the village be lost in that tragedy and 40 years later, work commenced to rebuild the 20 traditional houses.

In 2006, the restored houses were reopened to public as an open air museum and craft village. Visitors are encouraged to learn to explore all the buildings and ask about the culture and tradition. There are even classes one may take to try making traditional products like soba noodles and washi paper.

For a small fee of 500 yen, you can also try on a kimono or samurai armor and take photos around the village.
