“Otaru City General Museum” where you can view the past and present of Otaru

The port city "Otaru" is located in the southwestern part of Hokkaido, and is full of foreign atmosphere and only approximately 30 minutes by train from Sapporo. In addition to the famous Otaru Canal, you will manage to gain knowledge of past and present, and various things of Otaru as well as Hokkaido at Otaru City General Museum. Today, we are going to introduce you the main building and canal pavilion of Otaru City General Museum.

Otaru City General Museum Main Building, which Remained the Oldest Steam locomotive in Hokkaido Runs in Building

"Otaru City General Museum Main Building" exhibits the history, science, transportation etc. of Hokkaido, as well as railroads. Besides the exhibit of Shizuka steam locomotive which was active in Meiji era, there are also exhibit of digital planetariums and diorama models. In addition, Iron Horse which runs in the museum's premise is the oldest dynamic steam locomotive in Hokkaido. Visitors can actually try to take the locomotive.

Admission fee of the museum is 400 yen for general, 200 yen for high school students, and free for junior high school or below. There is a winter fee during the period from the beginning of November to end of April. (Winter Fee: 300 yen for general, 150 yen for high school students and others). Closed on Tuesdays (Closed on the next day if public holiday falls on Tuesday).

Otaru City General Museum Canal Hall has a Valuable Historic Building and Natural Environment

Otaru City General Museum Canal Hall which is near the main building and located at the coast of the Otaru Canal was built in 1893. The building used the part of the city designated historic building, "Otaru warehouse", introduces about 20,000 exhibits regarding the history and natural environment of Otaru City. There is a first exhibition room introducing the history of Otaru and a second exhibition room showing the natural environment, flora and fauna of Otaru. In addition, Otaru's most popular city streets of Meiji era and Taisho era are displayed in the first exhibition room by reproducing it into the actual size, to allow the visitors feel the prospered Otaru during that era.

Admission fee is 300 yen for general/winter, 150 yen for high school students and others, free for junior high school students and below.
