Lee’s Foodblog – Oysters, Oysters, Oysters in Miyajima!

If I had to choose my favourite five dishes, oysters would be on that list.

In Miyajima (approximately 40 minutes away from Hiroshima), I was tempted by the oyster restaurants along the street side.

Eventually, I gave in and discovered some of the most delicious oysters I’ve ever had!

I stepped into Yakigaki-no-Hayashi (焼がきのはやし), mostly because of the delicious looking oysters displayed outside the restaurant.
Escorted to my seat, I scanned the menu and decided to choose the set of “Raw Oysters (生がき)” and “Cooked Oysters (焼がき)”.
I figured that, this way, I could enjoy both tastes!

First, the raw oysters were carried to the table.
While normally my eyes would first travel and be fixated on the oysters, this time, my attention was diverted to the elegant food presentation.
The plate is bedded with ice to keep the oysters cool, and on the plate is a small model of the shrine gates which are a symbol of this island.
As for the oysters themselves, these were superb!
The three recommended ways of eating are: 1) as it is served, 2) with lemon, and, 3) with ponzu sauce.
My plate was soon finished and I was eagerly awaiting the next dish.

After a few minutes, my cooked oysters were brought to me.
The set is usually smaller, but there seemed to be a small error in the kitchen so more were on my plate than should be.
I felt as happy as one does when you draw the “Bank error in your favour” in a game of Monopoly.
These were delicious like the raw ones, and perhaps less “fishy”.

One of the aspects that I particularly enjoyed about the oysters in Yakigaki-no-Hayashi was that they are farmed, and not wild ones.
That way, I know that the oysters are bred in a safe and non-exploitative environment.
If you are like me, a fan of delicious oysters, which are bred ethically (a plus point!).
Make sure you make your way down to Yakigaki-no-Hayashi in Miyajima whenever you are in the area.
