What is teamLab?: An Experience Where You Become Part of the Art Itself

teamLab is an international “art collective” composed of specialists from various fields, including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, and architects.

What they create is not the traditional “art to be viewed from a distance.” On their official website, they describe their concept as follows:

teamLab seeks to explore a new relationship between the self and the world, and new perceptions through art. In order to perceive the world, people separate it into independent entities with boundaries. We aim to transcend these boundaries of perception, the boundaries between the self and the world, and the boundaries in our recognition of the continuity of time. Everything exists precariously and miraculously on the long, long continuity of time without boundaries.

What kind of experiences await you there?

As soon as you step into the museum, you enter a borderless space where you become one with the light and art itself.

  • Art that “responds to touch”: For example, flowers bloom and scatter where you touch, or new life sprouts where you stop walking—one of the features is an interactive experience where your movements are linked with the artwork.
  • The “presence of others” becomes beautiful: The art changes as others move or exist in the space, making everyone present a part of the co-creation process.
  • Feel it with your “body”: Walk through water, be surrounded by floating, glowing spheres or bubble sculptures, and sometimes even step into nature itself. You can fully immerse yourself in the world of art using not only your sight but also your sense of touch and bodily sensations.

As a “museum where you enter the water,” there are areas you experience barefoot. In addition to the Water Area and Garden Area, this permanent museum features works from projects such as “Catch and Collect Forest,” where you can catch and observe various extinct animals, and “Athletics Forest,” a complex, three-dimensional space for creative physical thinking.

You can enjoy a variety of experiences, such as eating vegan ramen inside the art at the “Black Emptiness Table,” or turning your own drawings into products like pin badges or T-shirts to take home at the “Sketch Factory.”

💡Tip: Since there are areas to experience barefoot, you will need to store your shoes and socks in free lockers when entering those areas. As there are also areas where you enter water, it’s recommended to wear pants that can be rolled up above the knees. Free rental half-pants are also available.

This is a nighttime outdoor museum at Nagai Botanical Garden, which opened in 1974. The artworks not only respond to the movements of visitors, but also change in character according to the behavior of the plants, wind, and birds and other living creatures inhabiting the area. This creates an overwhelming sense of openness and scale, distinct from indoor exhibitions.

It has become a staple night spot in Osaka, and is also popular as a walking course after dinner.

💡Advice: Since this is an outdoor museum, be sure to bring insect repellent in summer and dress warmly in winter.

It is perfect for those who want to enjoy the fusion of "Japan's original landscape" and art away from the city.

Additionally, it is adjacent to "Izura Yūgoku On Den Ato Onsen," where you can enjoy a free-flowing onsen and glamping. One of the highlights is that you can bathe in an onsen integrated with the artwork or even stay overnight.

💡Advice: Since you will be walking through the forest at night to view the artworks, comfortable clothing and walking shoes are essential. You can enter just the museum, but if you have the chance, we recommend staying overnight to fully immerse yourself in the world of the artworks.

💡[Important] Check Before You Go: Reservation and Dress Code Tips

① Advance Reservations for Tickets Are Essential!

As of 2026, most exhibitions require advance reservations with a specified date and time. Especially in Tokyo (Toyosu and Azabudai) and the latest venues in Kyoto, it is not uncommon for tickets to sell out several weeks in advance. Be sure to secure your tickets early through each official website or travel platforms such as kkday or Klook.

② Pay Attention to Your Clothing

Many installations feature mirrored floors. If you are wearing a skirt, it is recommended to use the free rental half-pants provided to prevent your underwear from being visible, or to visit in pants for peace of mind.

Additionally, since many exhibits involve entering water or moving your body as part of the experience, please be mindful of your clothing and footwear.

③ Estimated Time Required

On average, each exhibition takes 2 to 3 hours. If you want to enjoy taking photos, be sure to plan your schedule with plenty of time to spare.

Visit teamLab exhibitions all over Japan and immerse yourself in a variety of art experiences!
