teamLab is an international art collective that engages in experimental creative activities at the intersection of art, science, technology, design, and the natural world. Under the philosophy of "we want to explore new perceptions of ourselves and the world through art", they have created many magnificent and immersive works that make full use of digital technology.

The representative works have gained popularity all over the world and attracted many people. The work is known as "interactive art" where it is not only seen but also touched, and the presence of the viewer becomes part of the art.

What is the Permanent Art Museum "teamLab Biovortex Kyoto"?

Opened as part of Kyoto City's urban development

teamLab Biovortex Kyoto will open as part of a community development project through culture and art in Kyoto City, especially in the southeast area of Kyoto Station. Starting with the opening of the museum on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, the development of a cultural complex is also planned in the future.

What is the "environmental phenomena" pursued by teamLab?

TeamLab pursues the concept of "environmental phenomena" rather than traditional "material" artworks. This is a unique concept that "the environment creates phenomena, and those phenomena create existence". By creating a special environment, works are created by the phenomena created by that environment. In this museum, you can experience many works that embody this concept.

The museum will exhibit not only teamLab's representative works such as "Forest of Responding Lamps," which is familiar from the "Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless (now relocated to Azabudai Hills)" held in Odaiba until August 2022, as well as new works that have not been released in Japan before. Next, we will tell you about the experience report of the work released this time.

First release in Japan "Massless Amorphous Sculpture"

teamLab, Massless Amorphous Sculpture © teamLab

Massless Amorphous Sculpture is one of the unreleased works in Japan. Literally translated, it is "an amorphous sculpture without mass". Normally, sculptures use materials such as stone, wood, and metal, but this work uses very ordinary soap, water, and air, and is characterized by the fact that it does not have a fixed state. The concept is "environmental phenomena", in which "the environment creates phenomena, and those phenomena create existence".

Born from a sea of bubbles, the giant "sculpture" that floats in the air does not maintain the same shape for a moment. If you try to touch the bubbles with your hand, they will quickly disappear, as if you are grabbing a cloud. The foam was finely dry, and it was a strange feeling that it didn't become mushy to the touch like a normal soap bubble.

This work completely overturns the concept of "objects" and can be said to be the true essence of teamLab.

《Morphing Continuum》

teamLab, Morphing Continuum © teamLab

Morphing Continuum, like Massless Amorphous Sculpture, is one of the works based on the concept of "environmental phenomena". Countless spheres float in the space of the work, and when an order of energy is created in the space by creating a special environment in the space, that order creates existence.

Such explanation may not hit the nail on the head, but if you go there, you can understand what it means with all five senses.

This is really the state in front of us. The feeling of being one in the whirlpool of energy.

Before you know it, a large "existence = sculpture" has been created in a part of the space

In this work, the sphere hits your body lightly, but even if you try to grab the sphere with your hand, you can't catch it well. Vertically, horizontally, the sphere rotated in space, and before I knew it, a huge statue had been created in front of me.

This work, which is displayed in a particularly large space in the museum, has not yet been decided. When you touch the large flowers that appear one after another on the wall, the flowers bloom beautifully for a moment and then wither quickly.

The flowers are designed with influences from classical Japan paintings, making you feel as if you have entered the world of Japan painting.

"The Way of Birds"

"The Way of Birds" is a work of such a magnificent scale, in which hundreds of thousands of flocks of birds come together as if they were one giant life form, creating a new beauty as a whole.

The floor is mirrored, and sitting in the center of the space to admire it gives you a magical sense of immersion.

Forest of Resonating Lamps: One Stroke - a Year in the Mountains

This work was also popular at the "Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson teamLab Borderless (now relocated to Azabudai Hills)" held in Odaiba until August 2022. There are many lamps floating in a mirrored space that seems to last forever. When a person approaches a lamp, the light of the lamp in response to it leads to the nearest lamp and spreads to all the lamps in the space like a single stroke.

The light of the lamp changes one after another.

teamLab's "Environmental Phenomena" and the New Face of Kyoto

Please go to the site and experience the concept of "environmental phenomenon" created by teamLab with your own five senses, which cannot be conveyed through text and still images alone.

In addition, the southeast area of Kyoto Station, where this museum will be born, is currently undergoing "community development centered on culture and art and young people." It is located in a slightly different location from the areas and spots that are popular in overtourism, so you can spend a relaxing time. In the city of Kyoto, where traditional culture is deeply rooted, what kind of chemical reaction does art using cutting-edge technology cause? Expectations are high for future developments.
