B.LEAGUE Overview: Why Is It Gaining Attention in Asia Now?
The Birth of B.LEAGUE and Its International Appeal
B.LEAGUE was established as Japan’s third professional sports league, following baseball and soccer. However, before reaching this point, Japanese basketball faced various issues, such as league splits, international suspensions, and a series of team bankruptcies. The launch of B.LEAGUE in 2016 marked a new dawn and rapid progress for the sport.
B.LEAGUE consists of B1 (26 clubs) and B2 (14 clubs), with B3 as the lower division. This season, both B1 and B2 are divided into East and West conferences. Each club plays a total of 60 regular season games. The championship to determine the B1 season winner features the top two clubs from each conference (total of 4 clubs), plus the next best 4 clubs (excluding those top 4) as wild cards, making up the playoff contenders.
This season, players from 25 countries and regions are participating in B.LEAGUE. Notably, NBA Draft 3rd overall pick Jahlil Okafor (Hokkaido) and 8th overall pick Stanley Johnson (Nagasaki), along with a record 13 players with NBA experience, are playing in the league. With the expansion of the Asian Player Quota, many national team players from China, Hong Kong, South Korea, the Philippines, Mongolia, Malaysia, Lebanon, and more are also active, leading their teams in scoring.
The Power of "Arena Entertainment" That Goes Beyond Sports
Above all, one of B.LEAGUE’s biggest attractions is its high level of entertainment. Before the game starts, cheerleaders energize the crowd with a dazzling opening performance. There are also player warm-ups and fan cheering practice, so be sure to take your seat before the opening show to join in the excitement. The dynamic use of fire and lighting effects creates a concert-like atmosphere, immersing the entire arena in energy. The powerful sound system and the DJs who hype up the crowd are unique to arena sports. Don’t miss the adorable mascot characters from each club, who entertain fans as part of the team.

The Source of Excitement! Experience the Power of the Boosters (Fans)
In basketball, “booster” refers to fans who passionately support and cheer for their favorite team. By the way, cheering is also called “boosting.” Since this was a home game for the Yokohama B-Corsairs, many B-COR boosters (the nickname for Yokohama B-Corsairs fans) wearing their favorite player’s uniforms, towels, and merchandise were lining up well before the game started. Boosters energize the game with their cheers and clapping, sending power to the players and creating a sense of unity in the arena. The boosters’ support can put pressure on the opposing team and, in close games, can even influence the outcome. Almost every booster had the classic cheering item, the “B-CLAP,” which is used by clapping or waving it.
High-Level Offense and Defense Unfolding on the Court
The game consists of four 10-minute quarters. There is a 20-minute halftime break after the second quarter. At 14:05, the long-awaited tip-off (start of the game) takes place. The entire arena comes together in a big CLAP, and players over 2 meters tall dash across the court with incredible intensity! As soon as the players steal the ball, they make a quick move towards the basket.
The offense and defense alternate in a back-and-forth battle. The fast-paced plays fill the arena with loud cheers of “GO! GO! B-COR!” In the early stages, Yokohama B-Corsairs struggled against the opposing team’s three-point shots and couldn’t score much, ending the first quarter at 17-31 before a two-minute interval. In the second quarter, Yokohama B-Corsairs closed the gap with aggressive offense. They also made their free throws, and by the end of the second quarter, the score was a heated 39-45.
One interesting aspect of the game is during the opposing team’s free throws. The boosters (fans) put pressure on the opposing players with “booing”! This is widely accepted as part of the cheering culture, and you can feel a sense of unity as everyone tries to protect their team’s basket together.
In the second half, during the third and fourth quarters, the momentum shifted toward the opposing team, and unfortunately, Yokohama couldn’t secure a home victory. Even if you’re a beginner and don’t know the rules, the arena MC provides clear explanations of fouls and plays during the game, making it easy to follow along.
Basketball Game Gourmet Review
Each venue offers a variety of arena gourmet foods. Check out your favorite menu items during the free time before the game. On this day, a lineup of popular kitchen cars gathered, and even before the game started, the area was bustling with people from around 11:00. Freshly made, piping hot gourmet food can be brought into the arena!
Although it was unfortunately rainy on this day, on sunny days, eating outside on the lawn is also highly recommended.
The highlight is the “Cheesesteak” for 1,000 yen. Juicy meat is sandwiched in hot bread and topped with melty cheese—perfect as a one-handed snack for watching the game!
For a snack, I chose the original churros with a chewy texture. The popular “Rainbow Sugar” (500 yen) is not only delicious but also looks cute and colorful, making it a real mood booster.
