Old District Takayama

“Takayama” is probably still unknown to many foreigners. However, since Shirakawago, a cultural spot that recognized as a world heritage by UNESCO, became popular and went viral on internet, this area is getting more visited by international tourists. Shirakawago is not the only one you can enjoy here. Located around one hour drive from there, you can find an old district that offers the other side of Japanese history.

This old distric can be reached 12 minute walk from JR Takayama station. The most importat spot you should visit is Sanmachi, an old street which is packed by old building and shops with show era style architectures. You can find a great numbers of restaurants and souvenir shops along the street. The most popular one is the local’s sake, which is made directly with yeast that is cultured by the shops’ owners themselves. There are a lot of types of sake you can sample with only around 200 yen!

Near Sanmachi, there is a red bridge, called Nakabashi, which crossing Miya River. This is another favorite spot for tourist to take pictures. In the spring you can find sakura trees along the river.
