Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, Ishikawa is famous as the castle of Toshiie Maeda. Currently, the place where Kanazawa Castle was located has had reconstruction and restoration work done and stone walls and gates have been restored. With its establishment, it has become a park where you can feel the atmosphere of the castle as it was in that time period. The history of Kanazawa Castle started a long time ago when Honganji temple was established on Kanazawa Mido in 1546. Later, Sakuma Morimasa started to build a castle in 1580, and Maeda Toshiie took it over three years later in 1583. Maeda Toshiie entered the castle. It was where the 14th Kaga-Maeda clan lived until 1869. After the Meiji period, the castle became the army base until the end of the war, and then it was used as the Kanazawa University campus until 1995. After that, it started to be developed as a park such with infrastructure development areas and rest facilities, and was later opened as a city park in 2001.

Kanazawa Castle Park was established in the ruins of Kanazawa Castle, which was the castle of the former lord of Kaga. The area spans 285,000 square meters in total. There is a restored watchtower, a gate, a garden and other sights on the premises. The inside of places such as Hishi Yagura, Gojukken Nagaya, Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura, and Hashizumemon gate can be viewed for a fee.

Gyokusen’an Rest House in Kanazawa Castle Park

A building for taking a break, “Gyokusen’an Rest House” , was established at a place where the government office for garden maintenance management was during the Edo period. From the room you can see the beautiful garden. Furthermore, at night on weekends the garden area is illuminated creating a magical sight. In the Japanese-style room you can enjoy matcha and original fresh sweets relevant to each season.

Kanazawa Castle Park is open from 7:00-18:00 from March 1st - October 15th and from 8:00 -17:00 from October 16th to the end of February. Admission fee is free.

Hishi Yagura, Gojukken Nagaya, Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura and Hashizumemon gate Usage Guide

Hishi Yagura, Gojukken Nagaya, Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura and Hashizumemon gate open from 9:00-16:30 (last entry 16:00). Admission fee is 310 yen for adults (18 years old and over) and 100 yen for children (aged 6-17 years old).  

Kahoku-mon Gate Usage Guide 

Kousen-mon is open from 9:00-16:30 (last entry 16:00). Admission is free. 

Gyokusen’an Rest House Usage Guide

Gyokusen’an Rest House is open from 9:00-16:30 (last entry 16:00) and is closed from December 29th-January 3rd.

To access Kanazawa Castle from Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Bullet Train from Tokyo Station to Kanazawa Station and take a bus from Kanazawa Station to Kenrokuen.
