When is Japan’s Tonami Tulip Fair held?

Tonami Tulip Park is located near Takaoka city in Toyama prefecture. Tulip cultivation started in the Taisho period in Toyama prefecture from a mere 10 tulip bulbs. It currently boasts the highest shipping quantity of tulip bulbs in Japan. These “Toyama tulips” sprawl across 7 hectares in the city park and have become a symbol of spring in Toyama.

When is Japan’s Tonami Tulip Fair held?

The Tonami Tulip Fair is held at Tonami Tulip Park from late April to early May. Three million tulips colour the grounds and many tourists gather here during the fair period. You can appreciate tulip displays such as tulips arranged in pictures, the 4-meter high x 30-meter long tulip corridor, and tulip hydroponic flowerbeds floating on water that were planned in Tonami. Moreover, the largest five-story water turbine in Japan is also worth seeing. You are certain to get absorbed in the beautiful scenery that has been elaborately designed.

In general, Tonami Tulip Park is free to enter anytime. However, during the “Tonami Tulip Fair” period, the park can only be visited from 8:30 to 17:30 (last entry is 17:00). An admission fee of 1,000 yen for adults and 300 yen for children is required. It is also possible to purchase tickets in advance that are 100 yen cheaper at convenience stores such as Seven-Eleven.

At Tonami Tulip Gallery, next to Tonami Tulip Park, you can see tulips that bloom in spring all year round. The highlights are the “Tulip Palace” where you will be surrounded by 500 cut tulips and the “Pallet Garden” with 5,000 tulips in bloom. You can also enjoy the tulips while learning about the growth process and history of them.

There are also attractive buildings in Tonami Tulip Park. For example, the Tonami Provincial Museum, which used to be a bank, has been designated as a cultural asset of Tonami as a representation of Meiji Western-style architecture. The oldest building in Tonami City, the former Nakajima family residence, is also a place where you can find out about the old style of farmers in this area, so please check it out.

Access to Tonami Tulip Park

When is Japan’s Tonami Tulip Fair held?

In order to get to Tonami Tulip Park, go through Toyama Station. It takes 2 hours and 8 minutes from Tokyo Station to Toyama Station by Hokuriku Shinkansen. It takes about one hour by plane from Haneda Airport to Toyama Airport, and then about 30 minutes by bus to Toyama station. Transfer onto the JR line at Toyama station and head for the nearest station, JR Tonami station.

During the “Tonami Tulip Fair”, it is best to use the free shuttle bus that runs every day from Tonami station to Tonami Tulip Park.
