Lee’s Travelog – Shirahama Jinja’s Secret Torii

※This article was published at September 2015.※

One of the main attractions of the Izu peninsula is the Shirahama Jinja, the oldest shrine in the area. The grounds of this shrine lies in the back of the Shirahama beach, a stretch of pristine white sand complemented by deep blue waves.

During the summer, the grounds of the Shirahama Jinja is closed to public. However, if you would still like to catch a glimpse of it, I suggest instead of heading to the main door, head to the beach. Walk along the shores of the Shirahama Ohama beach to the north, and you will find a secret torii that is associated with the Shirahama Shrine. Not many people know about it because it is slightly removed from the main shrine grounds.

Climb alongside the large stones to get a closer look, but be careful of the moss, as they may be slippery. The view of the Pacific Ocean is absolutely stunning from this vantage point, and I highly suggest you catch this scene during sunrise or sunset.

If you visit Shirahama Shrine in other seasons, the secret tori is also accessible via the back end of the Shirahama Shrine.
