The month of May, is the one with the most numerous “shukujitsu” 祝日 on the calendar.
“Shukujitsu” 祝日 means National Holiday in Japanese.

Japan has 16 “shukujitsu” 祝日 every year, that’s quite a lot compared to other countries.

People who are not working are usually spending them resting at home, visiting touristic places or doing shopping.
In big cities almost all the shops, entertainment places are opened.

There’s almost a whole week made of national holidays in May which is called “Golden Week”.
In some companies people can also take off the normal days which are between the national holidays and have 7 to 10 days off! Since everyone is going on trip and touristic places on the same time, this is the most crowded period of year for travelling.
In September, there’s also many national holidays and the period is called “Silver Week”.

However, you must also note that places like banks, post offices, administration and some touristic places, restaurants or museums might be close, that’s why it might be useful to be able to recognize the Chinese character of “shukujitsu” 祝日 when traveling in Japan.
