明治大学で勉強しているマレーシア人留学生をインタビューしてみた。

What kind of university is Meiji University?

明治大学って、どんな大学?

Meiji University is a long established private university in Japan (established in 1881). At first it started as a Law School , but nowadays it is a “university located in the city center” where a variety of faculties, for instance, science and technology, business administration, etc. are available. It has 4 campuses, and its “Surugadai campus” can be accessed within 5 minutes by train from Tokyo Station.

明治大学って、どんな大学?

Among universities in Japan, Meiji University has been ranked No.1 for eight consecutive years as the “university that focuses on employment”. In Japan, the rules of job hunting are many, and support from a university are big help to foreigners. Furthermore, the university is generous in providing financial support such as a 50% discount on tuition fees to the top 10% of the students.

Not only academically, students in Meiji University perform well in national sport events such as judo and soccer.

Interview with Malaysian student in Meiji University

FJ: Please introduce yourself.

Sitiです。マレーシアから来ました。

Siti. I am Siti. I came from Malaysia. I’ve been here for 1 year and 8 months, and am currently studying at the Faculty of Science and Technology at Meiji University. I am a 4th-year student. After my graduation in March 2019, I will start working in a company in Japan.

FJ:Why did you choose Meiji University?

Siti: The university has a course that I wanted to study and I have a scholarship. Before I came to Japan, I studied at MARA Japan Industrial Institute (MJII) in Malaysia. When I was making the decision for a university in Japan, there were about 20 universities on the list. I really wanted to study “Electronics and Bioinformatics” which is a combination of “Engineering” and “Biology”. That’s why I chose Meiji University.

FJ:What’re the good things about studying in Japan and Meiji University?

Siti: Well, I chose what I wanted to study, and the lessons are very interesting! Furthermore, the professors are all very nice, I am very thankful for this. Of course, the facilities for experiments and research are well-equipped too.

FJ:Now that you are studying and doing your research here. What’s the most difficult part?

Siti: Japanese like to abbreviate words. Sometimes I don't understand the abbreviated words. I have no problem with words used in daily life, for example, “sumaho (smart phone) or “staba (Starbucks)”, but for words such as “naruhaya" (“narubekuhayaku” - please be earlier as possible) or “akeome" (“akemashite omedetougozaimasu” - Happy New Year) that are not used so often, I didn't understand them at first.

FJ: Apart from your studies, what do you do in your daily life?

Siti: Have you heard of Netball? In short, it is basketball for ladies. I play netball about 3 times a month. It helps to reduce stress by doing sports.

Recently, to save money for my move in March, I try to work more at a part-time job.

FJ: Since you are a Muslim, how do you arrange Halal food?

Siti: Basically, I buy the food supplies from a website called “BATICROM”. Recently I bought halal cakes and halal bento via Instagram too.

And there is something I look forward to every week. Every Tuesday and Wednesday at Ikuta Campus, the canteen serves halal kebab. I go there every time just to eat that. It brings me happiness!

Thank you for the interview.

Next, we will have interviews with students from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
