There are more foreigners studying in Japan. They study Japanese, experience life and travelling in Japan. However, when you plan to study in Japan, you may feel uneasy. You may also be wondering where to get information on studying abroad.

For those who are interested in studying in Japan, we have interviewed foreign students at ISI Japanese Language School. You can learn from their experience!

ISI Japanese Language School was established in 1992 and is part of a Japanese Education Group with offices located in Tokyo (Ikebukuro, Takadanobaba), Kyoto and Nagano Prefectures. The school provides courses from beginner to advance level for diversified needs and levels. The attractive course of ISI is the “Job Hunting Support” course, which provides the necessary skills and knowledge for business or employment such as Japanese business, business manners, interview manners and much more.

I decided to interview two students who attended this school.

Interviewer: First, please introduce yourself.

MAY: My name is May and I am 25 years old. I graduated from a university in Thailand and after that I came to Japan. I am studying a graduate course at ISI Takada Baba School. I have been in Japan for about one and a half years and I've been majoring in Japanese since high school, so I have had about 10 years of experience with the Japanese language. I wish to know more about Japan and I thought that I could get more information and experience for my postgraduate research by moving to Japan.

HANA: I’m Hana. I came from Belgium and I'm 21 years old. It has been approximately 10 months since I came to Japan but before moving over I had been studying the Japanese language for about 2 months back home in my country. I would like to study fashion and so I decided to study abroad in Japan due to it being one of the most fashion forward countries in the world.

Interviewer: Why did you choose ISI Japanese Language School?

MAY: This school has various courses, instead of only courses for studying for the Japanese Language, there is also graduate course available for students. I can take the Japanese proficiency class while studying my advance course, which is very convenient. Since the upper limit of the proportion of each nationality is fixed for each class, I got the opportunity to meet people from various countries and make friends from all around the globe.

HANA: My friend who has studied at this school recommended to me. This school is known for its advanced school support and I was told by my friend that I could consult with my sensei anytime whenever I have trouble, therefore I decided to choose this school without any hesitation.

Interviewer: What do you like about ISI Japanese Language School?

MAY: First of all, my class teacher will always guide me and help me in regards to graduate school. I can consult with my teacher not only about studying, but also the matter of life and problems. Moreover, this school also has a part-time job and job-hunting support, so I think it will be very useful for me.

HANA: That's right. Every teacher is so friendly and extremely helpful. I also started seeing a lovely Japanese guy and have made a lot of friends.

Interviewer: What do you do during your free time? Are there any troubles you face?

MAY: I attend classes in the morning during the week and after that I go to my part time job and work during the afternoon. When I have my free time, I will visit places that I never been before or study at a café. Sometimes I will go to a restaurant for dinner with my friends or travel to some of the beautiful places found throughout Japan. Regarding the Japanese language, since I have visited the country 20 or so times, it isn’t too much trouble for me to understand the language.

HANA: I will take a walk around Shinjuku and Omotesando to see the fashion. Even though I don’t buy anything, I’m happy just admiring the items displayed at stores. I occasionally face some difficulty with my Japanese language as there are many Japanese words, which I misunderstand, and sometimes I cannot understand what the others say to me. It isn’t easy to study a language that I’m not overly skilled in but I’m learning every day.

Interviewer: Can you tell me your future plans after graduating from the ISI Japanese Language School?

MAY: I’ve taken the admission exam last month. If I passed the exam I will continue further my study at a graduate school from April 2019.

HANA: After graduation, I am planning to enter a fashion-related vocational school. In the future I would like to become a hairdresser or make-up artist in Japan.

Interviewer: Finally, do you have any advise for those who are planning to study abroad in Japan.

MAY: If you want to master Japanese efficiently, the best way is to study in Japan. By studying Japanese while using it in your daily life, you can improve your Japanese language efficiently.

HANA: The world will change when you start the first step! Give it a try!
