If you are in the Japanese countryside, you might see several of those places which looks like coin laundry shops.

But looking at the chinese characters on the front, “clean” and “rice”, you might guess that there’s no need to bring clothes and detergent.

As many of you might know, Japan’s basic food is rice.
For sure, rice in supermarkets comes from big exploitations or farms.
But in the suburbs and countryside, many people like to grow their own rice in small rice paddies.
The problem is that rice doesn’t directly come white, washed, and polished from the field.
For centuries people had to go through the hassle of separating the brown bran around rice grains to get that beautiful white-ish color.

But nowadays, the problem is resolved with automated coin rice washing machines available along roadsides.

Come with your harvested rice and put it in the machine for your speedy-washing solution.

The machine will shake the rice to remove the inedible brand.

And voila! You have white rice at your service.
Price-wise, it’s pretty inexpensive. Only costs 100 yen for cleaning 5kg.

If you find one of those shops, don’t hesitate to go inside to discover how does it looks and works. The most pleasant part is that the inside smells like the sweet fragrance of fresh rice!
