紅葉
Have you ever seen this kanji? and do you know what it means?
This Kanji is written everywhere in Autumn.
If you can read Chinese, maybe you will pronounce it as Hóngyè, if I’m not wrong which means red leaves, however this kanji doesn’t necessarily mean “red leaves”.
紅
First this Kanji means Deep Red/Crimson.
and
葉
This Kanji means Leaf or plural leaves.
At first, I got confused but now I know what it means.
Let me explain it to you guys.
In Japan, people have two kinds of pronunciation of this kanji 紅葉.
The first one is pronounced as こうよう (Kouyou) which means autumn leaves.
and the second one pronounced as もみじ (Momiji).
Now what is momiji? Momiji is this…
Even though it is not fully red, got some polka dots on it, this is Momiji which looks somewhat like a maple leaf.
It’s tricky isn’t it?
Sometimes in some context, you must read the kanji as Kouyou and in other context you have to read is as Momiji.
But anyways, lets see the pictures of 紅葉（こうよう）that I took when I was in Takao-san(name of a mountain in Tokyo).
Momiji and Autumn leaves are really beautiful aren’t they?
Being from Indonesia, this is the first time for me to experience autumn in Japan and see the 紅葉.
I loved it!
