This week, let’s learn how to say “child” in Japanese!
Ko or Kodomo is the word used to say “child” or “children”.
Look at the Chinese character “子”, it looks like a small person with arms wide opened.
May 5th is “Kodomo no hi” (Children’s day), a national holiday in Japan.
This festival is originally celebrating health or strength for little boys, that’s why samurai armors and helmets are used for the traditional decorations.
Also, families with boys are used to set “nobori koi”, kites shaped like carps, flowing in the wind in front of the house.
“Kodomo no hi” is now not only for boys, but for all children.
It’s one of the many national holidays which occurs in may during the Golden Week.
Those holidays are a perfect occasion for families to spend time together and build nice memories for children.
What do you think about having a national holiday to celebrate children?
