For history lovers and people who want to know more about life in Japan 100 years ago, the town of Urayasu right next to Tokyo, accessible by metro, has many old house preservations that people can visit for free!

Let’s go see Kyu-Udagawa-jutaku, a shop keeper's house built in 1869!
The beautiful Kyu-Udagawa-jutaku house is located in a residential area via a 5 min walking distance from Urayasu station.
This house which was built in 1869 of the Meiji period, was used as a shop on the ground floor and as a habitation on the second floor.

Clients enters and face the shopkeepers.

The space in the back has a garden and the living rooms filled with tatami.

The family living here was quite wealthy.

On the wood pillars of the living room, different decorations were used to hide construction nails, but also as lucky charms to protect the house from evil spirits.
Here is the kitchen in the back with the fireplace and iron pot to cook rice.
You can climb on the second floor but be careful as the stairs are very difficult to climb.
Many associations are working hard to preserve those houses for visitors.
There’s also a volunteer guide who’ll explain you information regarding the house in Japanese.
