Sweet potato is one of the most basic Japanese ingredients.

There best time to eat sweet potato is in Autumn, with the new harvest.



You can find many sweets or snacks made with sweet potatoes.


One of the most popular is called “daigaku imo” or “university potatoes” in Japanese.

Sweet potatoes are cut in chunks, fried then tossed in syrup made with honey or sugar, then sprinkled with black sesame.


It’s a cheap snack that people can make at home too.



You can find more sophisticated version in this store specialised into sweet potato located between Yotsuya Sanchome and Shinjuku Gyoen park called Jusanri.


This store only use top class sweet potatoes and other ingredients.

I choose some unusual version of “daigaku imo”.

The fried potatoes are covered with a syrup made from black cane sugar and matcha green tea powder.

There’s also some sweet azuki beans black sesame.

The combination was absolutely delicious.

The potatoes were crispy on the outside and silky inside, the light bitterness of the green tea powder gives a nice contrast with sweetness of syrup.
