Hi, Navio here!

We are having holiday here in Japan.
A continuous holiday called “Golden Week” (ゴールデンウィーク / goorudenwiiku)

May 3rd: 憲法記念日 (kenpoukinenbi)  = Constitution Memorial Day
May 4th: みどりの日 (midorinohi) = Green Day
May 5th: こどもの日 (kodomonohi)  = Children’s Day

Speaking of Kodomo no hi, Koinobori (鯉幟) is one of the main aspects.
Koinobori must sound really familiar with us, right?

Anyone here who doesn’t have any idea on what a koinobori is?
Don’t worry, let me explain :D

Koinobori is a flag like, carp / koi shaped wind streamer.
Japanese people that have little children in the house, usually put this ornament on the Children’s Day, usually on a high place, like rooftops or balconies.

Oh, there is also a song about koinobori:

---------------------------------------------------------------
Yane yori takai koinobori
(Koinobori, higher than the roof-tops)

Ooki magoi wa otoosan
(The big carp are the father)

Chiisai higoi wa kodomo tachi
(The smaller carps are the children)

Omoshirosou ni oyoideru
(They’re swimming happily)
---------------------------------------------------------------

Try singing it with your children!

A complete set of koinobori, consists of 3 main parts:
1. 矢車 (yaguruma), pole with a spinning ball shaped windmill.
2. 飛龍吹流し (hiryuu fukinagashi), the colored wind streamers above the fishes.
3. 鯉幟 (koinobori), the koi wind streamers.

As you can see, the koi streamers are never alone, a set of koinobori usually has, at least 3 koi fishes:
(from top to bottom)
Black Koi (represents the father of a family)
Red or Pink Koi (represents the mother)
Blue Koi (represents children of the family), below the blue koi, another colored koi fishes are usually added to represent younger children.

The fishes aren’t just mere decorations, they’re filled with hope that the children will grow strong and healthy, just like the fishes!

Even though I don’t have any children, I am just going to put this mini koinobori on my balcony today!

Happy Children’s Day! :D
