Hi friends!

As I was filling out a form the other day, I had a “lost in translation” moment.

If someone poses a question and asks you to select all that apply, what would you do?  By habit, I started marking the items that I agreed to with an “X,” assuming “X” was like a “✓” mark, meaning “yes”…

Afterwards, I realized that I had answered it all wrong: “X” in Japan means “NO!”

In Japan, people often use the symbols ◎○△× to mark things or to make an assessment.  The triangle always makes me smile, because I feel like it describes the Japanese culture.

If ○=YES and ×=NO, then ◎=DEFINITELY YES and △=MAYBE/SOMEWHAT.

Where I come from, it’s either Yes or No: you either mark the item with an “X” or you don’t mark it at all.  Who knew symbols could be so misleading?!
