This week’s Fun Japan Word is a very important word for students: “Gôkaku”合格.
Gôkaku means “accepted” in Japanese.
Since school begins in April in Japan, many students start to have their exams in January.
People aiming for university will have to take entrance exams for each and every university they are applying for.
There are also entrance exams for junior high school and high school in Japan.
During this period many young people (and their anxious parents) will pray in temples or shrine dedicated to education like Yushima Seido in Tokyo we presented you before on Fun Japan.
Those temples and shrines are selling lucky charms written “Gôkaku” on them.

In supermarkets and stores, you’ll also find many stationery written “Gôkaku” on it like pencils or eraser, and even snacks!
Parents or friends are often offering some snack or energy drinks with a small note where they write “Gôkaku” or “Do your best!” to cheer students!
Did you have some lucky charms or special habits when you took exams?
