When visiting a foreign country, perhaps the most stressful situation you could be in is when the local keeps on talking to you, but you just ca’t understand what they’re saying.
You’d like to express your confusion somehow, but you feel like it is rude to stop someone who is trying to help you.
Well, here’s a very useful word for you!
わかりません “Wakarimasen” = I don’t know, or I don’t understand
Wakarimasen, would be a polite way express your confusion, perhaps something like “I’m sorry, but I don’t know”
Maybe even combine it with ごめんなさい “Gomen-nasai” which is “I’m sorry”.
If you ask for help from someone, bt you just can’t quite understand what they’re saying, go on and say “Gomen-nasai, Wakarimasen”. Then, they’ll perhaps break it down for you a bit, or use gestures and maps or smartphones to get the message past.
Remember “wakari masen” and there’s nothing to stop you from asking anything in Japan!!
