One of the best ways to beat the scorching Japanese heat is to spend the afternoon indoors and explore outdoors when the temperature drops in the evening. While venturing around Jingumae this past weekend, I stumbled upon the Suzu Café, a quaint and kitschy establishment just off the high streets of Omotesando.
Seeking shade from the heat, I entered, only to be surprised by how cool the café was both literally and metaphorically! The interior of the café exuded a cool, minimalistic design with hand drawn sign boards, chairs that did not match, fabrics and textures that seemed like they should clash but actually melted together into a potpourri of sensory excitement. Literally, because the walls of the café were left as concrete, it allowed me some respite from the high temperatures of summer.
The food in the café was simple but delicious. I had the shrimp salad with a side of juice. Even better, the café had free wifi! All I had to do was ask the waiter. I ended up spending nearly 4 hours there catching up on work and enjoying the suzushii (涼しい) feeling of Suzu Café.
If you want to escape the heat, they have branches around most of the tourist areas of Tokyo!
