The National Science Museum nicknamed "Kahaku" is in Ueno, popular not only with the locals but also with tourists.
The main building, the Japan Gallery, was built in 1931, and was designated as an important cultural property as the "Former Tokyo Science Museum – Main Building".It is said that the building was designed based on an image of an airplane which the then director of the museum wanted.
You enter the museum through this grand entrance made of stones.


Inside, you will be impressed with grand marble walls and lighting that makes you feel the history.
Passing through the ticket booth, you’ll see a breathtaking ceiling.
The white dome ceiling which is beautifully decorated is so impressive that you will never get tired of seeing it.
Be sure to view the stained-glass windows that enhance the serene atmosphere through the natural sunlight.

The meticulously designed stairs, handrails and window panes make you feel that you have been transported to another time.
Take a close look at the beautiful marble walls and stairs with various shade of color.


The third floor of the South Wing in the Japan Gallery houses the permanent exhibition, the "Japanese Archipelago".
This is a fun place even for small children.
The exhibition shows the Japanese archipelago – through the geological ages – geological changes along with four seasons, and animal fossils and specimens to learn biology of various creatures.
A must place to visit!



The second floor of the North Wing in the Japan Gallery shows "Japanese and Nature" – people's daily lives and interaction with nature in the old days.

In the Global Gallery, which is under repair and partly closed, you’ll learn about the earth’s environment and culture through large-scale animal figures.
The museum shop sells a lot of original goods – perfect for souvenirs.
