Malay Asian Cuisine is a halal restaurant located in Shibuya, Tokyo, that serves the food of Malaysia. It claims to give an authentic and exciting blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Nyonya cooking. When I first came to this restaurant, I was surprised on how similar their cooking was to Indonesian cooking. They have sate/satay, nasi goreng, tumis kangkung, pisang goreng, and so on. They named some differently, but some of them have the same basic ingredients. And because this is a halal restaurant, I can rest assured and order whatever I want. I lived in Shibuya my first year in Tokyo, and since then I often come to Malay Asian Cuisine restaurant whenever I want to go out for halal food.

Malay Asian Cuisine is about a 10 minute walk from either Shibuya station or Omotesando station. Walking through the Aoyama street and you can see the signboard of the restaurant.

The restaurant is located on the second floor of the Sanwa Aoyama Building, just above the Family Mart convenience store on Aoyama Street. To enter the restaurant, take the elevator to the second floor. Upon entering the restaurant we can feel the nice South East Asian ambience.

I usually eat at this restaurant at dinner time, but this time we came at lunch time. In Malay Asian Cuisine during lunch time, we can order one main dish for 1000 yen and get tabehodai (all you can eat) for soup, salad, and dessert, and also nomihodai (all you can drink) for soft drinks, coffee and tea. I think this is very cheap in Tokyo.

The soup, salad, dessert, and drinks for all-you-can-drink/eat at lunch time

The soup was something like a garlic soup, and had clear broth. It was light and refreshing. The salad was your usual Japanese salad, with vegetables like corn, cabbage, lettuce, and carrot. Dressings such as thousand island, tartar, and mayonnaise were also provided. For the drinks, they provided coffee, tea, juice, and other beverages from a soft drink machine. For the main dishes, we ordered Mie Laksa, Nasi Goreng, and Nasi Lemak (1000 yen each).

Nasi Lemak

It was my first time eating Mie Laksa and I liked it. The broth of the Mie Laksa tastes like an Indonesian curry, but somewhat thicker. They mixed scramble egg and few slices of squid in the Nasi Goreng, topped with green onion leaves and fried onion. It was delicious. The Nasi Lemak was served together with sambal, meat, a small fish dish, peanut, egg, shrimp crackers, and also slices of tomato and cucumber. The portions of the three dishes were not too big so we finished them well and for me it was quite filling.

The foods are delicious, and I always enjoy every time I have a meal in this restaurant. The staffs are friendly and they speak English, so you don’t need to worry about communication. I think some of them speak Chinese and Malay, too. You can pay by cash or credit card.

When you are in Shibuya and are craving for some South-East Asian taste, I think this restaurant is a perfect choice.
