3 Places To Visit In The Ueno-Asakusa Area

As Tokyo is a metropolis where going from one attraction to another can easily take a lot of time of your daily schedule, it is advisable to plan your trip according to the locations of the places where you want to go. Therefore, in this article, we give suggestions about places to go near Asakusa and Ueno area.

1. Edo-Tokyo Museum

The Metropolitan Edo-Tokyo Museum introduces the history and culture of Tokyo, formerly known as Edo. The museum is large, so you can spend hours and hours learning about how the metropolis developed from a small village. Therefore, this would be a perfect place to go the first thing in the morning! The permanent exhibition is divided into two main areas, “Edo” and “Tokyo”.

This museum is very interesting for even someone who is not a history fan. The permanent exhibition introduces the life of the old times in a very practical ways. For example, there are real-size displays of how people used to live those days.

2. Shinobazu Pond in the Ueno Park

After learning about the history of Tokyo, how about riding a boat in Shinobazu Pond in Ueno Park? Although you have to change trains once, it takes only 15 minutes from Ryogoku (the station closest to the Edo Tokyo museum) to Ueno Station.

There are 3 types of boats to choose, a cycle boat, a swan boar or a row boat. The pond is famous for the swan boats (it’s not like you can ride a swan boat just anywhere, right?) so I would recommend the pedal-powered swan boat. When floating in the pond, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery. If you are coming to Japan during the cherry blossoms season, this is also a good way to admire them!

3. Bentendo Temple

In the middle of Ueno Pond, there is an island that has a beautiful temple. Why not visit it at the same time? The name of the temple is Betendo Temple, and it is located in Benten Island.

The temple was build in the early 17th century. At first, it was difficult to get here but after a stone bridge was constructed in late 17th century, this place got more popular. Nowadays, many people come here to check out the temple that, when looked from afar, seems to float on the pond.
