It was last week when I and some friends of mine hung out together around Shinjuku.
We stopped at a restaurant for dinner.
When one of my friend, that is currently studying in a culinary school, took out this funny looking package.
“This is a kind of Japanese snack, please have a bite”, he said.
Can you read the biggest kanji written in black there?
築地 (Tsukiji) is a famous fish market, located in Chuo area, Tokyo.
You must have heard of Tsukiji before, right?
Do you know what the word “Tsukiji” mean?
It means “reclaimed land”
Wow, this snacks sure look tasty.
Let’s have a bite.
So I picked one up, and, wait..I recognize this shape..
“Hey, what’s this?” I asked.
“A tiny crab, why?” he answered while crunching the “tasty snack” in his mouth.
“Oops, what a close call”, I put it back in the plastic bag.
“What’s wrong?”
“Uhm, I’m allergic to crabs, shrimps...you know, crustaceans!”
“Oh!! I see! Sorry, my bad”, as he apologized.
“No, no, it’s totally fine!
So will you tell me? How does it taste?”
According to his explanation, the snack tastes just like a sweet and spicy shrimp (still no idea on how it exactly taste like, since I can’t eat shrimp either).
Is it hard? “No”, he said.
You can purchase these Hitokuchi Kani (一口カニ) / one-bite-sized crabs at a store called 築地かねよし (Tsukiji Kaneyoshi), open every day from 9:00 - 15:00!
Will any of you try it and tell me the taste?
