Lee’s Foodblog – Vietnamese food in Shibuya

Shibuya has always been my favorite go to place for a meal as there are so many options.
Last week, I decided to try out a cuisine I have no experience in – Vietnamese food.
Located on the 6th floor of an unassuming building, Hoang Ngan Vietnamese Restaurant is a little restaurant that serves inexpensive local fares from Vietnam.

I went just a little before lunch time, and surprisingly, the restaurant was empty!
I nearly thought I walked in when the restaurant was closed by was instead told that they had just opened.
Scanning the menu, I couldn’t quite decide what I wanted so I ended up ordering 2 dishes: a chicken pho (780 Yen), and a spring roll noodle dish (780 Yen).

The chicken pho was warm and hit the spot for a windy, cold day.
The chicken broth tasted nutritious but was a little on the salty side.
On the other hand, the spring roll noodle dish was cold and a little flavourless.
I had to season the food with the chili garlic vinegar, which, by the way, was divine!
The sourness perfectly complemented the oiliness of the spring rolls.
That said, the dishes were interesting but nothing to write home about.
Perhaps this is because I have never had Vietnamese food.
Next time, I will try to bring a Vietnamese friend and ask for his opinion.

I ended the meal with a delicious cup of Vietnamese drip coffee (200 Yen) (potentially the best I have tried so far!) and a small sago dessert which was given as part of service (サビス) whenever you eat at a restaurant during certain meal times.

All in all, the dishes at Hoang Ngan were mediocre, but the coffee definitely gets a recommendation for me!
If you would like to give this place and its delicious coffee a try, do head towards Shibuya during your next trip to Japan!

Hoang Ngan restaurant is a short 5 minute walk from Shibuya Station.
It is a little easy to miss, so make sure you keep your heads up onto the 6th floor!
