Glover Garden is a valuable spot on the hillside overlooking Nagasaki Port, with international history and buildings. Centered around the former residence where foreign traders resided, the Western-style buildings that were scattered around in Nagasaki City were relocated and restored, and publicized as a foreign settlement site. By the way, Nagasaki City, with Nagasaki Port, has a history of prospering in international trade from the late 16th century, and you can get a glimpse of what life was like at the time in Glover Garden.

Traditional Buildings of Glover Garden such as Old Houses and Schools

There are nine traditional buildings in Glover Garden. There are 3 former residences built over 150 years ago, and 6 buildings including schools and restaurants that have been rebuilt and restored, and you can tour each one. Three 3 old homes, including the “Old Glover House”, which is designated as a National Important Cultural Property, is the highlight. This Western-style building has traditional Japanese tiled roofs, and has an unusual appearance that fuses both Japanese and Western architectural styles.

The "Old Glover House" is undergoing preservation and repair work until March 2021. Although you can’t see the inside during this period, a special observation deck has been installed, and you can see how the preservation and repair is going from the outside.

Statue of Puccini and Other Statues at Glover Garden

A pure white male statue and a bronze statue of a woman with a small child stand in the garden. These are the statues of the composer "Puccini" of the world-famous opera "Madame Butterfly" set in Nagasaki, and the opera singer "Tamaki Miura".

There are seasonal flowers in Glover Garden. Among them, you should definitely see the cherry blossoms that bloom in the spring. With Nagasaki Port, where ships come and go, set in the background, and you will be amazed by the overlapping landscape of cherry blossoms in full bloom and traditional buildings.

Business Hours and Admission Fee for Glover Garden 

Glover Garden is normally open from 08:00 to 18:00 (last admission until 20 minutes before closing), and is open all year round. In addition, during the period when it is lit up at night, closing time is extended to 21:00 at its latest.

There is an admission fee for Glover Garden, being 610 yen per person.

Access to Glover Garden

To get to Glover Garden, use the tram of Nagasaki Electric Railway from JR Nagasaki Station. Transfer at “Shinchi Chinatown” stop and get off at “Oura Tenshudo (大浦天主堂)” stop. The tram takes about 20 minutes, and after getting off at the station, it takes about 7 minutes on foot to reach Glover Garden.
