Lee’s Travelog – Kyoto Daigo-ji Temple

※This article was published at May 2015.※

Daigo-ji Temple’s name is derived from Daigo (醍醐), which means ‘crème de la crème’.
Indeed, this World Heritage Site is worthy of this praise, as its 1100-year history shines through the beautiful buildings and landscapes.

Daigo-ji Temple, a World Heritage Site, is tucked away in the hills of eastern Kyoto.
The name is derived from Emperor Daigo who abdicated the throne in 930 and became the head monk of this temple.
The temple is also well known as the site where Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a great warlord in the 16th Century, held lavish hanami (flower viewing) party – inviting all the powerful people from across Kyoto.
Daigo-ji still remains a popular destination for cherry-blossom seeking tourists.

The temple has three parts: Sambo-in, Shimo-Daigo (Lower Daigo) and Kami-Daigo (Upper Daigo).
Sambo-in, the Museum and Shimo-Daigo require tickets.
Tickets are sold at 600 yen, 1000 yen and 1500 yen respectively for entry to one, two or all of the areas.
For a taste of history, we recommend the Sambo-in or the Museum.
Meanwhile, to view nature (including magnificent cherry blossoms in the spring), Shimo-Daigo is worth a visit.

On the other hand, the Kami-Daigo area is popular among hikers.
While the English website of Daigo-ji Temple says that the hiking path is closed, the hiking path is actually open (as of April 1, 2015).
The hike to the summit takes approximately 30-40 minutes.
There are some buildings off the beaten track too, and if these are also visited, the total journey time is double.
