Lee’s Travelog – Zuihoden mausoleum in Sendai

※This article was published at December 2014.※

Zuihoden mausoleum is the grave of Date Masamune, a warlord and local leader in the Sendai area.

He was born in 1567 and ruled the area for a sustained period of time – promoting economy, culture and local industry and thereby laying the foundations of modern-day Sendai.

One of the greatest features of the Zuihoden mausoleum is how close you can get to the buildings themselves.

The buildings in the grounds were rebuilt after World War II and therefore remain in good condition.

You can admire the various sculptures and woodwork from a close distance.

Also, the use of colours reflects how many buildings looked like in Japan over 400 years ago.

Allocate about 90 minutes to walk thoroughly around the temple grounds.

What else to do in Sendai?

The top are eating beef tongue (gyutan), seeing the tsunami stricken areas on the coast and visiting the scenic Matsushima.

You can also use Sendai as a hub for travel around the Northeast of Japan.
