Inu 犬 (dog) Fun! Japan Words vol.45



Last week in Fun Japan Word, we learned how to say cat in Japanese. 
This week let’s learn how to say dog.

The word for dog in Japanese is “Inu”.

 

There are various words and expressions using the word “inu”.

For example there’s “koinu” for a small dog or a puppy.

“Inugoya” is a dog house.

It’s also used for describing different types of dogs like “Shiba ken” for Shiba dog, or “Akita ken” for Akita dog which is the breed famous for the statue Hachiko.

The character used for dog could also be read “ken” when combined with other characters.

“Aiken” is the combination of love and dog, and is used to describe a dog loved by his/her master.

There are also many proverbs using “inu” like:
“ Inu mo arukeba bô ni ataru” which literally means “even dogs stumble on a stick”, explaining how even masters of certain art would fail at times.
