Hello everyone!

Last time, we briefly introduced you to Kawagoe, a small town in the north of Tokyo, very popular for its historic district Koedo, perfectly reconstructing the charms of the Edo period.

Today, we’re going a little deeper in Koedo, to eventually attain the major landmark of the city, the clocktower “Toki no Kane”!

It’s always funny to see cars pass normally like this in the old town -

if I were mayor, I would restrict this zone to pedestrians, so they can fully enjoy the old town, without having to worry about the cars!

This is a shop called Kameya, where you can find very cute turtle-shaped sweets -

have a try, you can’t miss it!

Also if you go to Kawagoe, do not forget to try the Imo-Koi, a steamed bun made with mochi, red bean paste and a slice of sweet potato.

Eat it while it’s hot.

Another souvenir/sweets shop called Imo no kura - literally the “Potato Cellar”.

As we mentioned last time, the sweet potato is one of the specialties here in Kawagoe, when it is used as an ingredient in all kind of foods, alcohols and even ice creams!

Enough shopping, let’s wander more around the old town!

GOAL!!

Toki no kane, the “Bell of Time” is the symbol of Kawagoe - it’s been telling the time to people for over three centuries! Currently, it only rings 4 times a day at 6am, 12pm, 3pm and 6pm.

The Bell of time is one of the rare tall buildings in Kawagoe so you should be able to spot it easily!

A view from the bottom of the bell, it should give us a ring soon!

This ends our brief Kawagoe adventure - stay tuned with us for our next destinations in Japan!
