Last month, a new Japanese site made the UNESCO World Heritage List!

Located in the Gunma Prefecture, the Tomioka Silk Mill is a symbol of Japan’s industrialization in the 19th Century.

Originally built in 1872 (Near the start of Meiji Period), this mill quickly became a model for all other mills in Japan and helped boost the Silk industry.

A painting of the mill, when it was still running full-throttle.

The mill was fully running until 1987 (!), from when it became a Cultural Site of Japan.

It is said to be one of the last intact factories from the Meiji Period, making it a key destination for Japanese tourists and international ones, especially since its nomination to UNESCO. In May, it is said that more that 50,000 people have visited the site (3 times for than last year!).

With this nomination, Tomioka Silk Mill became the 18th site to be chosen as a World Heritage and 14th in the Cultural category.

It is following the Mount Fuji, which also became a World Heritage earlier this year.

We strongly recommend Japan culture and history amateurs to visit the site - as it is located less than 2 hours from Tokyo.

Let’s fo the silky way!
