Fukui may not show up on the average tourist’s radar. Even the local Japanese will wonder why you set foot into Fukui (unless you went to see the dinosaurs, of course). However, that doesn’t mean that there’s no good food. In addition to seeing the dinosaurs, I made a brief stop at Taihei, a restaurant serving mainly fish.

I spotted Taihei while walking around the city. In smaller cities in Japan, good food is often found near the city hall and the financial districts. This is because these are the best employers in town, and their workers seek good food places for lunch. Keeping this in mind, I set foot into Taihei, which is not far from the Fukui City Hall.

Reading the menu was the most difficult part. To give you a rough guide, here’s how the lunch menu works. First, there are various sets which consist of a main fish dish, a vegetable side, a bowl of rice and miso soup. For an additional 500 yen, you can add sashimi (raw fish). I ordered the ‘daily set’ (which changes every day depending on what fish is available at the market), with a sashimi top up.

My favourite dish was the daikon, or radish. At home, it is difficult to cook and stew vegetables for such a long time (especially if one is working), so this is a dish that I don’t cook very often.
The sashimi is also wonderful. If you take a close look at the squid (the white block of meat), you will notice that the surface has been slit horizontally and vertically. This extra effort is put in by the cook to allow the customer to eat the squid easier. Squid tends to be chewy, but by inserting these slits, biting the squid is made much easier.
